Bill's Book Series

Welcome to Bill’s Book Series Blog

I haven’t counted them but I am guessing there are lots and lots of very good blogs out there that are dedicated to reviewing books. This is not one of them!

Erm…let me rephrase that. I don’t mean that this is not a good blog. In fact, nothing would make me happier than for this to become a very popular blog and have 10 or so followers. What I mean is that in this blog I will not be reviewing individual books but rather reviewing/describing book series that I have personally read.

What do I mean by “book series”?

To me, a book series is a collection of books that, when read in a certain order (not necessarily published order), lead you through a series of events and adventures over a period of time involving the same basic characters. That sounds like a pretty dry and scientific description but I think you know what I mean.

I might make a couple of exceptions to this but time alone will tell. Since I haven’t gotten started yet, who knows in what direction this will eventually lead.

Why book series?

When you finish a good book that is not part of a series you’re done with it. You’ve invested time in developing the characters in your own mind, you’ve visualized how they walk, how they talk, how they interact with each other, what motivates them. You’ve transported yourself into their world and have lived with them for the duration. But your done. It’s over. You’re back in the real world.

Now, if you finish a good book that is part of a series you are not done. Life goes on in whatever time and whatever place you’ve been. The characters might be living their lives without you but they are waiting for you to return. For you there is something to look forward to. There is another time and place to go to reacquaint yourself with your friends.

Ok., so that was a bit theatrical but you know what I’m talking about.

What do I mean by “reviewing/describing”?

The thing I dislike about individual book reviews is that they often give away too much of the plot. I understand that it is necessary to give some of it away – you only have to look at the liner notes of any book to see how the ad men draw you in with a short teaser – but, in my opinion, most go too far.

For me, reading a book is an adventure. A journey without knowing the destination. If I know where I am going and how I get there, it is no longer an adventure. In my reviews I will describe characters, locations, periods, writing style, my emotional reactions and any other background information I feel is necessary to persuade you to start reading (or not). I will do my very, very, very best not to describe the plot of any book.

So, why am I doing this?

Simply stated, I enjoy reading books. I enjoy reading serials. I’m looking for something productive and constructive to do in my retirement and this is what I have chosen.

If you’ve read this far, you might think this is going to be a pretty dry blog. Well, I have a sense of humor and those who know me will no doubt expect me to inject some attempt at humor into this blog. Hopefully, they won’t be disappointed.

I hope you get enjoyment from it, I hope you will help contribute to the enjoyment through your comments and, perhaps, even a review or two yourself. For more information about me and insights for my motives please read the About page.

See you in the blog!
